FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
How did your program originate?
Our program is modeled after the NOT School program in the UK. The program was created to re-engage youth who have not been successful in traditional schools. With a 95 % success rate, Not School has successfully re-engaged youth in learning in the U.K for 10 years. Recognizing that we have the same needs in the US, Not School and the W-A-Y program have formed a partnership.
Whom do you service?
We service high-school aged youth, aged 15 to 19, who have become disengaged from traditional school for a variety of reasons and have dropped out or are at risk of doing so.
How does W-A-Y differ from traditional school?
W-A-Y Program exists to put education in the hands of students by re-engaging them into a community of learners who have a common goal: To earn a High School Diploma. Our learning community is built based upon the interests of students so that they can earn credits with a Project Based learning focus. Our online community is available 24 hours per day and 7 days per week, giving you an opportunity to work at your pace.
What tools do I need to be in this program?
Our districts provide each student with an iMac workstation, digital camera, and Internet connectivity at no cost to you.
Do I have to go to a building every day?
No. You are expected to attend a Learning Lab two times per week, based upon your own schedule and lab availability. Your daily requirement is to sign in to the online community daily, email your mentor, and complete the tasks you discussed.
How long does it take to graduate?
That depends on the amount of credits you entered with, and how motivated you are to finish! You dictate the type of projects you want to do based on the credits you need to finish and your interests.
How will Credits be determined?
All projects created are based on the State of Michigan Content Expectations, or the Michigan Merit Curriculum. Certified teachers that are highly qualified in their content areas assess your products and learning artifacts. All projects are cross-curricular, giving you a greater opportunity to work and earn credit in more than one subject area at the same time. There are projects out there to get you started, do not worry! Once you have completed enough content standards you earn a credit.
What happens at induction?
Induction is your WELCOME party into the W-A-Y Program! During this time, you will set up your equipment, learn about the online community, and learn a little about the MAC.
Do you have a prom, team sports etc...?
It depends on your campus, but we are always open for suggestions from you.
Do we have a graduation ceremony ?
The campus leadership determines Graduation ceremonies. W-A-Y suggests celebrations twice a year for researchers who complete their required credits.
What if I go on vacation? Do I have to take my computer?
We recognize that you will go out of town. Let your team leader know and an arrangement can be made.
